Thoughts of the Week #3: Holding On to Memories That Alzheimer’s Threatens to Erase

Week 2: October 12 to October 18, 2024

You know what’s hard? It is seeing someone you love decline so quickly. Memories come clashing in as an avalanche of the person they once were and the countless special moments shared.

Right then and there, you begin to realize just how unfair life can be. But is it really? In some ways, it’s quite the opposite—you have all these amazing memories to cherish for a lifetime. The hardest part is witnessing, and wondering how the mind can play such cruel tricks, eventually becoming their own worst enemy. In this case, the mind has the upper hand, conquering what once seemed unconquerable.

I guess that’s just part of life and the thing we call aging that comes with old age. Being aware of that fact doesn’t make it less easy.

The unfortunate thing is, you can’t do anything to take their suffering away. The warrior inside you is willing to go to the ends of the earth and back for them, but any attempt is useless. You’re left there, feeling defeated, watching as each passing second strips away pieces of their personality, leaving only a shell of the person they used to be.

Slowly, Alzheimer’s smiles back, showing just how undefeated it can be. It’s painful to realize that all the effort to ease the suffering seems pointless. Meanwhile Alzheimer’s takes pride in holding captive the memories once thought to be unforgettable. Alzheimer’s may take away all the memories, but it can never touch what’s in his pure heart.
