How to Be Grateful Every Day?

Benefits of Being Thankful for What You Have

Grateful! It’s such a simple word and yet it holds a profound meaning.  Being grateful and giving thanks shouldn’t be a once-a-year thing. On the contrary, it should be a daily occurrence.

There are a lot of things we ought to be thankful for that we regularly overlook or take for granted. We might unintentionally forget them, still we do. Occasionally, daily tasks distract us from what we should truly pay attention to and deem as important.

The benefit of being Grateful

Time to Appreciate the Simple Things

Breathing for example. Breathing is such a simple task that we do it subconsciously.  Due to it being a simple task, we often forget to give thanks for our ability to breathe unassisted and for having a good pair of healthy, working lungs.

Life is much more enjoyable when we are appreciative of all that we have received. We get it all wrong when we associate appreciation with everything going smoothly—that couldn’t be further from the truth. True gratitude comes from deep within, regardless of the hardships life throws your way. Hardships are inevitable, but what we can control is our attitude toward those challenges.

Reflect on Your Blessings

This holiday season, I encourage you to seriously think about all the blessings life has given you, as well as the numerous trials you have overcome to get to where you are today. Your strength is admirable—it has pulled you through the toughest storms. Be thankful for the well-being of your family and friends and for having them in your lives, healthy and happy. Let’s not forget to give thanks for the food we eat, the water we drink, our ability to walk and see, and having a roof over our heads. You get my point!

Those things might be simple, but they have a huge impact on our daily lives. Without them, life would be boring and bitter, and we don’t want that. Do we?!

True Gratitude Goes Beyond Material Things

Another important aspect to consider is that we don’t need to possess a large number of material things or the latest luxury bag or technology to acknowledge just how lucky we are. Those things come and go, and as a result, we would be constantly dissatisfied with our possessions. Hence, we would end up searching for the next big thing with an unappreciative mindset. We don’t want that! We should strive to be thankful for both the good and the challenging moments, cherishing ourselves and the experiences that shape us.

Life is beautiful when we start viewing it with abundance and gratitude. Eckart Tolle summed it up perfectly with the following quote:

“Acknowledging the good that you already have in your life is the foundation for all abundance”

Because, let me break it to you, having a lack mindset isn’t getting you anywhere. Of course, things can always improve, but why don’t we enjoy the now as we work toward a better tomorrow? If you seriously sit down and contemplate, there are many things you can be grateful for besides the superficial ones.

That said, what is one thing you’re grateful for aside from material things? Comment below one thing you’re grateful for.
