The Public Is Over Celebrities—Here’s Why

Celebrities & The Race to Be Relatable

Week 12: Sep. 12 to Sep. 19 2025

Let me explain: before the rise of social media around the early 2000s and upon the creation of Instagram, celebrities were viewed as these untouchable creatures. Everybody wanted to be them, yet nobody had access to them!

Lately, that slowly began to shift with the introduction of social media. Back when Instagram first launched, it was rare to see a celebrity with a public social media account. As a result, in news outlet making this huge commotion whenever a famous person finally joined a platform.

It felt as if celebrities were stepping down from their thrones to become one of us-the common folk. For us, the common folk, it was an absolute privilege to be permitted to catch even the tiniest glimpse into the ultra-glamour life of a famous.  That uproar quickly caused the celebrity to gain thousands upon thousands of followers. Eventually paving the ways for more celebrities to join in and do the same.

Over time, the narrative sparked a change, and the flashy lifestyle gradually lost its appeal. More than ever, celebrities are going to great lengths to appear as relatable as possible. But in recent years, the public has been quick to see through these “relatable behaviors”. Often refers to those types of behaviors as phony or labels the individuals as social chameleons. That kind of behavior might have been seen as “cute” in the late 90s and early 2000s, but not anymore.

Ordinary people are growing tired of watching how these celebrities who are all talks and no action. In the current landscape, the masses are craving realness, emphatic and solidarity.

Humanity is becoming fed up with famous individuals who only want to be seen relatable for self-benefit. More common than not, they are acting like they have the public’s best interest at heart. Actually, it is a distorted reality when the true motive is to continue acquiring popularity and wealth. It has become painfully clear the decrease in viewership of countless award shows and entertainment news, for example. These things are superficial and are being rejected by the public. Simultaneously, it highlights the imbalance of wealth and social status while serving as a distraction.

In the end, the public is eager to support celebrities. Celebrities who are willing to risk it all if it means to standing up for what they belief. People wants to give their support someone that will be their corner when tough social issues arise and to speak up against injustice.  A glamorous lifestyle is no longer enough to earn or maintain fame. Followers want to see authentic behavior and a fearless attitude to fight for what’s right of the world.
